The United States Copyright Law, Title 17 of the United States
Code, Circular 92, Chapter 1, §107, states:

the fair use of a copyrighted work ... for purposes such as ...
teaching ..., scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of
copyright. ... for nonprofit educational purposes...
This is commonly referred to as the Fair Use Provision.
